Wokeness is detrimental to anti-racism

I wrote an article about my Asian experience of Woke politics, where I argued that: If you only care about equality for one group then you are not really fighting for equality. You merely want to become part of the ruling and exploiting class.

The comments that disagreed offered basically two counter arguments. One on the necessity of addressing racism against the most disadvantaged race first before anyone else. The other tries to justify the widespread prejudices that Asian face when trying to collaborate with Black anti-racism groups.

Both counter arguments are very revealing and I will address them in turn.

First, let’s look at the “most disadvantaged” approach. One argument says that Black is the most disadvantaged because it is the only group that cannot pass as White.

If you speak to informed Irish, Italian, Jewish, Latino or German friends, they can share the chapters in their histories when they were not considered white. Today they are all — including Latinos — considered white, if they choose to be. They have the option. They have access to the advantages of whiteness.
