Are you in denial about the impending collapse?
I get heated responses from people when I talk about the impending collapse — Climate collapse leading to economic collapse, leading to political and social collapse, and finally leading to mass human deaths — and the pervasive denial among most people. The criticisms are usually that there are already many emerging solutions and many reasons for hope.
We are already out of carbon budget. We were supposed to keep total carbon in the atmosphere to below 350 ppm in order to keep global warming below 2 degrees celsius. We are already above 410 ppm and rising. That means we are pretty much locked in for more than 2 degrees warming. The World Meteorological Organization now warns that we already could hit 1.5 degrees of warming with the next 5 years. Even though the IPCC has consistently underestimated the severity and overestimated the amount of time we have left, let’s still use their target of reducing emission by 45% compared to 2018 numbers by 2030 if we want to avert a climate collapse. That is about 8 years from now.
This is a graph of how the US is doing with regards to this target. The red represent the current trajectory. The green rectangle represents the 45% reduction by 2030 target.
